Why Jura?

If ever you’ve seen a Jura coffee machine go by you might have balked at the price and moved on, never stopping to consider if it was worth it. There’s no lie, most Jura coffee machines cost quite a hefty sum, but we need a little more information before we can make an informed decision about whether or not the coffee it produces is worth the expense.

Way back in 1931, in Niederbuchsiten, Switzerland a man by the name of Leo Henzirohs. Originally, Jura produces all types of home appliances, but starting in the 80s shifted their focus almost exclusively to coffee machines. Since the 90s, Jura has outsourced most of its production, though the headquarters remain in Niederbuchsiten.

In today’s market, Jura is known for its exceptional and innovative coffee machines. They produce only high-quality super-machines capable of making fine coffees. Jura makes exclusively high-end machines for avid coffee lovers.

All this sounds lovely, but does it guarantee better coffee? Well, yes and no. Jura’s many years of experience as a company has given them ample time to sort out all the kinks in production, delivery, and customer service. They have used their years in business to expand their market all over the world and build trust among their customers.

While they are known for their great coffee machines, there is always a chance you will be dissatisfied. All that said, you are the least likely to be dissatisfied with Jura over any other brand. While there is no way to quantify if their coffee machines are better than other companies, in our humble opinion, they are.

The Jura S8 is an award-winning coffee machine that sells itself as “the premium mid-segment”. It is a luxuriously designed machine with all the best components of other Jura machines combined. It is extremely multifunctional and great for any level of coffee connoisseur.

The S8 boasts a compact design that doesn’t limit its multifaceted options. While, like most Jura machines, it is on the pricier side, the quality of coffee that it makes easily negates the price tag. You’ll be wondering why you didn’t buy this machine years ago once you try a cup from it.

We have never seen a nicer-looking coffee machine. The Jura S8 is beautifully crafted inside and out. The technology implemented in it is cutting-edge and optimized to operate smoothly and quietly.

The machine’s outer design is just as pleasing but from a visual standpoint. The chrome and black give it a refined look, and the casing is sleek and hides all the components perfectly.

The Jura S8 relies on only the newest technologies to make it work. It employs the Aroma3 grinder, Pulse Extraction, and animated graphic interface.

Performance 5/5

We give the Jura S8 a 5/5 for performance, because, in our opinion, it makes incredible drinks. Seriously, if you are looking for barista-style drinks that you can make at home this machine had got you covered. Not only are there 15 pre-set drink options, but there is also a wide variety of customizable settings.

The coffee that comes out of the S8 is divine. With all its advanced technologies at play, the beans are brewed to perfection. No flavor or aroma is a lot in the brewing process, and with so many options you can customize each drink perfectly to your tastes.

We had some doubts initially that this machine could make such luxurious coffees, but we were quickly proven wrong. The Jura S8 can make a phenomenal cup of Joe…or cappuccino…or latte…or… Sorry, got lost in thought there for a bit. We’ll have to make some coffee later.

Ease of Use 4.5/5

For having so many features, this machine is incredibly simple to operate. The touch screen and animations make the process a cinch. The interface is intuitive and can be easily customized to suit the user’s needs.

Cleaning the machine is also a fairly simple process. It does require a bit of effort to get to some parts and can be annoying to have to frequently clean it. It also requires proper maintenance to remain in operation.

Features 5/5

As a coffee machine, you would expect the Jura S8 to be able to make coffee. You might even expect it to have some extra settings for making espressos or changing the coffee’s strength. Well, the Jura S8 does have all that, but it also has so much more.

With advanced technologies at play, the S8 boasts better-tasting coffee, easier use, and more customization options than most other coffee machines. The Jura s8 uses PEP and IPBAS technology for the perfect brew, and an Aroma3 grinder to get the most out of the beans every time.

Additionally, the S8 uses a touch screen interface with full-color graphics and animations to make brewing and customizing a cinch. While there are other coffee machines – even ones from Jura – that have more options and specific settings, we think the S8 has the perfect balance and variety of options.

Value for Money 4/5

While the Jura S8 is an exceptional coffee machine with a plethora of functions and capabilities, it is still quite expensive. In the end, your opinion of the price comes down to perspective.

If you are an avid coffee drinker with a love of creating and designing new blends and know you will get a lot of use out of this machine, then the price is worth it. If you are not a coffee devotee, you will still be able to find enjoyment out of this machine and its multiple uses, but might not be as impressed by the price.

Generally, if you think you will get a lot of use out of it, and find the premise of one machine that can make multiple types of drinks exciting, then we think you will find it to be worth the price.

What Can This Baby Do?

A better question would be “what can’t this baby do”. The Jura S8 comes with so many options it’ll be hard for you to decide what to make first, and second, and third, and– well you get the point. The S8 has a huge host of options when it comes to customizing drinks and all the mechanics and technologies to do it perfectly.

We enjoy the milk-frother on this machine and love how quietly it can grind. Oh, what’s that? You don’t know the exact mechanical ins and outs of the Jura S8? Well, let us help you with that. From the types of drinks it can make, to the technology behind its aromatic brewing system, and so much more, here are all the things this baby can do.

Types of Drinks

While mechanics and design are all well and good, we know you really can here with only two burning questions: what drinks can the S8 make, and are they worth the price.

Well, to start, you are sure to be pleased with the range of drinks the S8 can brew up. The Jura S8 has 15 set drink options, including coffees, espressos, lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos. The hot water and heated milk settings are also suitable for brewing tea or hot chocolate.

As for whether or not these drinks are worth the price: absolutely. If you calculate the average amount a young adult spends on coffee in a year versus the cost of the S8, you’ll see pretty quickly that they even out.

If you’re the type of person to drink fancy coffees daily, your S8 will have paid for itself in about a year and a half to two years. That may seem like a long time, but remember that you can use the Jura S8 for decades. In the long run, that’s some really good savings.

Grinding

As a super-automatic coffee machine, the Jura S8 comes complete with its own grinder. This machine employs the Aroma3 conical burr grinder to give you the best grind. Interestingly, this grinder is incredibly quiet. You won’t have to worry about breaking your eardrums just for a cup of coffee or waking anyone up if you are making coffee in the wee hours of the morning.

 As a burr grinder, it is made to run more gently than other grinders, crushing the beans without burning out or destroying the flavor. Yet, somehow as a gentler grinder, it can still grind down whole beans at an alarmingly fast rate. The grinder is also surprisingly easy to clean and maintain.

Pulse Extraction

The Jura S8 is a marvel of coffee technology. It employs only the best methods to extract the full aromatic flavor of the coffee beans for each cup it produces. A fundamental factor in this process is Pulse Extraction. This extraction process has two main components to make it work flawlessly.

The first step of the brewing process is called IPBAS or Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System. This is the step before grinding, where the beans are submerged in water to soften them and help them grind better. It is a vital step as it allows the Pulse Extraction to work correctly.

The PEP or Pulse Extraction Process is how the coffee beans are brewed. During this stage, rather than soaking the beans in hot water to leach out the flavor, they are repeatedly blasted with hot water. These strong bursts of water help to preserve the natural aroma of the beans and produce richer, better-tasting coffee.

Foaming

Adding foamed milk makes any drink better. Adding foamed milk directly from your coffee machines is exceptional. The Jura S8 is first-and-foremost a coffee machine. The quality of its foamed milk will never be as good as a dedicated milk-frother, however, compared to other coffee machines, it is spectacular.

While the Jura S8 does not have a dedicated compartment for milk – because let’s face it, that milk would get gross fast – it does have an advanced pick-up system that can take up milk from any container via a tube and deposit it into the frother.

This innovative system saves space, keeps the milk fresh, and is easy to clean as there are very few parts. The foam is very fine, making it ideal for any drink, and it is always ready to use. We like this feature a lot as it allows you to customize any drink and add a touch of personality.

Customization Options

Another marvelous feature of the Jura S8 is how easily you can customize each drink. These options make it super easy to design a drink for any situation. Too hot? Turn the temperature down. Going to bed early? Lower the strength. Want something special? Add some foamed milk.

The options, while not endless, really make it seem like you can make any drink with the S8. With ten coffee strength settings, three water temperature settings, coffee ground coarseness settings, and even a way to change the amount of water in each drink, your setting combinations are nearly unlimited.

Additionally, you can customize programs for the water hardness and self-cleaning cycle. It will take a bit of work to familiarize yourself with all the options, but it’s always good to have too many options than too little, right? We certainly think so.

Extra Special Features

If the actual mechanics of the coffee maker are not enough to satisfy your idea of the perfect machine, perhaps these special extra features will be. The Jura S8 is unlike any other coffee machine. In addition to its built-in grinder, frother, and spectacular Pulse Extraction Process, the S8 also boasts a touch screen interface and phenomenal aesthetic design.

Touch Screen

While there are other coffee machines out there with touch screen interfaces, none of them do it as well as Jura. Jura’s touch screen is large, clean, and reactive. It is designed with the user in mind and optimized for perfect customization options.

With just one gentle touch, you can have a coffee brewing. The step-by-step graphics and animations make the system easy to operate and customize. The screen is in full color so it is very easy to see and read.

One of our favorite parts of the interface is that it allows you to save and name customized coffee drinks. This makes it especially easy to get your exact favorite coffee going in the morning when you’re not yet fully awake.

The presets and drink options are easy to access, easy to change, and easy to understand. We think this is the best-designed interface of any coffee machine and it has a nice touch screen to boot.

Aesthetics

When it comes to design, coffee machines never tend to look particularly noteworthy. They often appear bulky and awkward with too many hinges and buttons. The glass, plastic, and metal parts clash making them look like something out of The Jetsons rather than a coffee machine.

Fortunately, Jura has managed to overcome this conundrum with its sleek and professional designs. Instead of looking like a Frankenstein creation made from scraps, the Jura S8 boasts a uniform and smooth design.

Anyone with an eye for design knows how well chrome and black go together, but Jura takes it a step further by keeping the overall design simple and geometric. The touch screen removes the need for buttons and prevents the machine from looking overly crowded. All of the mechanical parts are perfectly hidden away, leaving only three sleek spouts.

Though the S8 is a large machine, it in no way looks bulky. Instead, it appears refined and economical in its use of space. We think it may be one of the nicest-looking coffee machines we’ve ever seen – and we’ve seen a lot of coffee machines.

Final Thoughts

So after all is said and done, is the Jura S8 worth it? In our opinion, yes. We think this is the best all-around coffee machine for anyone looking to have customizability and flawlessly exceptional coffee for a relatively fair price.

As far as super-automatic coffee machines go, there are ones out there with more features and more automatic components than the S8, but the S8 will give you everything you need in a good cup of coffee. For such a sleek machine, it hides wondrous technologies inside.

No other machine will let you create barista-quality coffee with such ease and intuitiveness as the S8 for the same price. This machine strikes the perfect balance between functionality and affordability. It is easy-to-use, state-of-the-art, and makes a mean cup of Joe.
